To round up the summer and start the new season Lewisham Arthouse presents, Attempts to Get Inside the World, an exciting series of events initiated with the support of Vision Forum and Lewisham Arthouse’s Graduate scheme. Over the course of these two weeks a range of talks, screenings and performances will take place set within a laboratory-style exhibition. The intention is to reveal the raw edges to many of the processes that feed an art practice, shifting eyes away from the product and into the thick of the background. Particular attention will be given to research transgressing the boundaries of the studio – either through grappling with unknown subjects and disciplines, or through direct attempts to thrust oneself into the midst of an often extreme set of physical and psychological circumstances.

The exhibition space will house two main conference events, Retreat: in the City – 27th and 28th August, organised by Michael Whitby, and Navigating Extremes - 3rd and 4th September by Natasha Rosling. Artists, curators, architects, choreographers, and theatre practitioners from across Europe and London will come together to present talks, set-up discussions, screenings and performances under the umbrella of Attempts to Get Inside the World. A series of furnitures and rolling projections will occupy the gallery space - presenting works, artefacts, test pieces, experiments and research material selected by each participant in reference to the practices discussed.

Retreat: in the City, 27th – 28th August, 3pm onwards.

Retreat is an annual residential workshop, providing creative practitioners with the opportunity to enjoy a focused period of communal living whilst intensely debating artistic practices. Four the past four years Retreat has been set within rural hide aways in North Wales and Cumbria, yet this summer it periodically changes form for its first public appearance in London.

Retreat: In the city, will be a two day non-residential version of the annual Retreat. Its coordinator Michael Whitby has curated 6 presentations over the two days by people who have attended retreat over the past 4 years. The presentations will be accompanied by food, film screenings and other activities. Unlike the usual ‘Retreat’ this event is open to the public and will climax with a party on the final night, the 28th August. Anyone attending the event is invited to walk to the venue to capture the true spirit of Retreat.
